I Like Monday 28
Aug. 11th, 2014 03:22 pmThis Monday, I like... sketching to the MTV Music channels.

Edited from an image taken from Logopedia.
When I was an undergrad university student, music channels were often a default choice. As a first year experiencing insomnia, I would sneak down to the Art and Soul Room to watch VH1 until the sun rose, and in third year I spent whole evenings with my friend, Lesley, watching The Box and MTV - that's "MTV" with no other subtitle, back in the days when they still played music videos instead of "staged reality" shows about randy, drunken twentysomethings from Newcastle. But as a postgrad, I drifted away from the music channels; later on, I drifted away from contemporary rock and pop altogether, preferring to listen to Classic FM.
Recently, however, I've been finding my way back into modern music, and that has been partly due to my Sketchy Sundays. I can't watch a traditional TV show and draw at the same time, despite being female and thus an allegedly natural multi-tasker. I could turn the TV off, of course, but I like the chatter and colour of it in the background. The great thing about music videos is that you don't have to watch them, you can just listen. And if I can't think of anything to draw, I might see an image on the screen or pick up the mood of a song, which will inspire that day's picture. My usual ports of call are MTV Rocks and MTV Classic, although I also go to Magic or Kerrang! from time to time, and they have got me out of sketcher's block several times.
So there you go, music channels: recommended viewing for Sunday Sketchers.

Useless fact of the day
Jun. 26th, 2014 04:49 pmYesterday, it was six months until Christmas Day. Today, it is six months until Boxing Day. I am sure you all appreciate me pointing that out. :P
Also, Broadchurch is awesome. Forget that Australian slag, you can collapse on me any time, DI Hardy! >:DDD
[Edit to add:] ...Why does the 'horny' mood icon have a bloody nose? o.O'

Jan. 8th, 2014 12:29 pmAwake is awesome! Watched the first two episodes last night and I am definitely gonna put it on series record. I'm personally going with the theory that both of Britten's lives are real and that the accident triggered a part of his brain that allows him to move between the two.
(Yes, it was made in 2012 and it's only appearing on UK TV now, that is the price I pay for living on the other side of the Atlantic :P)

Review of the year
Dec. 31st, 2013 04:33 pmIn 2013, I...
- turned 33.
- asked a lot of mysterious and random questions of my LiveJournal friends, as I fact-checked elements of a story.
- got slooooowly back in touch with Ruth, Lesley and LJ, my old university friends, in an attempt to make human contact outside of work.
- discovered the time-wasting potential of TrendHunter.com...
- ... and via the above, discovered the joys of mash-up fan art by Amy Mebberson, Karen Hallion and Hyung86.
- spent more money than I ought to in The Works.
- realised that I need to put a time limit on how long I write, because spending too long leaves me grumpy and depressed. On that basis, I made a deal with Mum to stop her nagging me about writing, but she has recently started again...
- tidied my wardrobe (well, most of it).
- went on holiday to Jersey and learned that four-star hotel menus are not all that.
- got new bosses at work and watched an already-bad situation get worse, ugh.
- and as a result of the above, got more and more cynical and sharp-tongued.
- got rid of the task of clerking the Coleraine family courts!... then got it back again, thanks to said new bosses >.<
- got obsessed with paint colour names and colouring-in books.
- read a lot (but then, I do that every year).
- re-started using my local library, although most of the time I borrow books with absolutely no intention of reading them. *guilty look*
- bought a re-useable calendar of "calming thoughts" and promptly started to disagree with them.
- watched Strictly Come Dancing for the first time and loved it. My only quibble is that it's on too early in the evening, which leaves you scrabbling to find something to watch from 8 o'clock on...
- watched "The Day of the Doctor" on 23 November and fell in love with Doctor Who again (I had drifted away from the show following a... family incident which had been started by this episode).
- started listening to my pop and rock CDs again, after several years of only playing instrumental and classical music. I blame the pop radio station which my workmates tune into (and which I can't stand).
- applied for two new jobs and a transfer... didn't get any of them.
- got a bonus woohoo!
- gave up on taking packed lunches to work.
- did NOT join any dating websites... but thought about it. A lot.
- made a necklace.
- bought the same style of shoes as I had last year.
- wrote in pink.
- FINALLY got a passport. And still haven't used it.
- err, downloaded spyware like an idiot >.< Luckily in the middle of doing so, I mentioned what I was doing to my brother, so he got straight on to removing it.
- wrote this list.

NaNo Day 8
Nov. 8th, 2010 10:48 pmI skipped day 7 and watched My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on YouTube instead. Sleep-deprived Applejack is hilarious!
Day 8:
10791 / 50000 words. 22% done!
Yeah, I'm behind. Oh well, I've been behind every other day too (bar one). I've decided to stick for now with the word count on the Macbook; it's more comforting than the others :)

The above userpic is ironic...
Feb. 24th, 2008 05:54 pm*yawn* Ugh, I'm so tired. This comes of a combination of a bunged nose, getting up early and staring at a computer screen for too long. I need to come online more often, wading through two months' worth of Hotmail is not good for me.
I have changed jobs AGAIN!!! Honestly, it's like I'm fated to never stay anywhere more than a month. This one, which I started at the beginning of February, is up in Belfast working in finance (though not as an accountant). Hence all the early rising in order to catch the train, and - since I'm standing around on a freezing cold platform five mornings a week - hence my cold. Ugh. And this last week I got two new job offers but I'm turning them down. (A) they're much the same as I'm doing now - same salary, same kind of location and hours, same sort of work etc. and (B) I'm tired of moving for moving's sake. And there are only two things wrong with my current job: I have to listen to BBC Radio 2 all day (if I hear "The Village Green Preservation Society" one more time, someone is going to die) and LiveJournal and Hotmail are blocked, boo!!!
Hooray for Hotel Babylon's return! And I finally remembered to watch Ashes to Ashes, yay Gene Hunt! I'm totally confused about our latest time-traveller/fantasist in a coma and her weird flashbacks, but meh, I'll figure it out eventually. As for books, I've been reading First Among Sequels by Jasper Fforde, White Night by Jim Butcher, Fatal Revenant by Stephen McDonald, The Nanny by Melissa Nathan... I can't think of any more.
Anyway, hope everybody's well. Gonna take a quick peek around my friends page now, so maybe you'll see me in comments :)

Jul. 4th, 2006 09:59 pmI woke up to a thunderstorm this morning. Well, I woke up to one of the cats nyaming. Then I heard the thunder. I didn't see any lightning unfortunately, which for me is the best part of a storm.
I've been watching Season 3 of Scrubs all day, so I feel wasted. Not wasted-drunk but wasted-haven't-done-anything-worthwhile-and-am-not-motivated-to-try-to-do-anything-worth while. Does that make sense?
My life has been dull since finishing the chapter. Mind you, it was dull while I was doing the chapter.
Ivy returned! She went missing for *thinks* four or five days there and we were all a bit anxious. Ever since Sooty (another cat we had for a brief while - kinda a long story: she got hurt, didn't come back for ages and died on the operating table when we went to fix the original injury), we panic if one of the cats hasn't been seen. But Ivy came back just fine. Our cats usually do; it's just been the one bad experience. And Puss is now kept in the garage at nights.

May. 29th, 2006 04:33 pmContrary to popular belief, I have not fallen off the edge of the universe. Nor have I been abducted by aliens or had my mind wiped by men in black. I have been busy and my dial-up connection has been playing silly buggers. I did have a massive entry written but lost it due to my somehow deleting a password >.< but here are the brief highlights:
- PhD is going well; long may it last!
- History books are good. Doctor Who is better.
- Pets have been ill and aren't out of the woods yet.
- I hate job-hunting.
Hope that helps.

Apr. 30th, 2006 10:44 pmI understand that today is
wispykitty and
nefermoon's birthday. Happy birthday, both of you! I hope you had a good day.
Also, tomorrow will be
littlegreenpony's birthday, so happy early birthday to you as well, Minty.
Doctor Who yesterday was AWESOME. Best episode yet. Moving, sad, funny, thoughtful, fantastic. I never knew Anthony Head did such a good steely glint. He made a fantastic bad guy with delusions of goodness. And the kids with the computers creeped me out every time; it was horrible.
I may be developing a crush on David Tennant. I had dreams. Non-sex dreams, but still very emotional dreams which woke me up, the emotions got so strong. This could be a good thing or a bad thing. I'm hoping it's good. Oh yes, and I want a K-9.

Just spent far too long reading my friends page *drops dead* Yeesh, you people have too much happening in your lives! Why can't you be boring like me?? :P And worse, there's piles of memes and quizzes. I haven't felt like doing any in a long time, but I'm sorely tempted today... However, I also need to get some work done cos I took yesterday off to read the March issue of SFX (I'm loving being a subscriber! So much easier than staking out Eason's each month, and it's such a thrill to get a package in the post. The only thing is, I'm not so fussed about the no-bylines covers :/ They look so... incomplete. Dull. I want bylines dammit!). I also have to meet Mark to give him a pile of socks he wanted, and I'm not gonna get as long a day up here as I thought; I was gonna meet up with LJ and Ruth to see Walk the Line but that's been cancelled due to illness, hair cuts and boyfriend-visiting. Which reminds me, have to message Dad and let him know I'll be home on the 5 o'clock train.
However, going home early means I can watch Olympic Men's figure skating Free Programme on BBC Interactive *drools over the costumes* I was watching the Short Programme and reading SFX during the marking when it occurred to me that figure skating costumes are rather like superhero ones: brightly coloured, made of spandex and completely impractical *imagines Batman trying to do a triple lutz* *breaks brain*
Also on tonight, Hotel Babylon, which makes up for me always forgetting that Las Vegas is on Sky3 at 8pm on Saturdays. The two shows have pretty similar setups: ensemble cast of staff in a luxury institution, looking to satisfy every wish (at a price, of course) of the obscenely rich people who come there. Las Vegas probably has the prettier cast and more exciting setting, but Hotel Babylon has Dexter Fletcher, who is unbelievably cute and has the best voice ever :)
Sorry for talking about TV so much, but honestly, the shows I watch make up about a third of my life. Another third is PhD work, comic books gets a sixth and everything else gets lumped together in the last slice of pie chart.
The PhD research is going well, although I do have to read more Derrida *bangs head off the wall* I'm currently reading The Mysteries of Paris and London by Richard Maxwell, which is really enjoyable.

Feb. 11th, 2006 07:54 pm:DDDDDDDDDDDDD Got to see the Doctor Who Christmas special yesterday; it was repeated on BBC3. Can I say SQUEE?!? David Tennant/Tennent (not sure if it'a an "a" or an "e") is HAWT. Especially in pyjamas. And especially when he's being sneaky-clever. I'm so excited now for the new series. It's just gonna kick ass. Then today, I watched the pilot mini-series for Battlestar Galactica. So, much sci-fi fun has been had by me. Never mind the construction of super-giant telescopes :) (My brother Philip has got a telescope for his birthday and it's HEE-OWGE!)
Also, yay, winter Olympics! I love the Olympics. *squishes figure-skating and ice dancing, and also the Kenyan team, cos there's only 2 of them awww!*

Feb. 4th, 2006 09:09 pmThere are too many good things on at 9 o'clock on Thursdays. The Closer on More4, Cold Case on Sky 3 and Hotel Babylon on BBC1 >.< Damn television. And DC Comics is just as bad. They bring out too many comics that I want to read, but I know I can't afford to. Poot.
Eee, looks like I'll be going with LJ and Ruth to see Bon Jovi in London in June *excited* That is, if Wembley Stadium is finished on time and if Francesca hasn't sold her ticket to Christina. But yeah, I'm totally up for this. We're planning to make it a long weekend and go see Les Mis or Phantom as well. Yay West End!!!
Work's going well. I need to remember to do writing though; I'm supposed to get Leon an opening for my chapter by the end of this month, and since coming home I've lost track of days and dates.
Apologies for this being so disconnected. I'm trying to watch tv and type at the same time :) Plus, since moving home, not a lot happens to me during the day to write about. And when something does happen, like having an intellectual argument with my eleven-year-old sister, I forget about it too quickly.

Nov. 16th, 2005 01:05 pm( Quiz! )
My sister Sharon and I had a long text-message conversation last week about how much, exactly, Batman rocked. Even when he's being an idiot. Which, for a guy with genius-level IQ, he does surprisingly often. I bought Batman the Animated Series: Volume 1 along with Batman Begins last week, so I'm on a bit of a Bat buzz at the minute *snugs Mr Dark Knight*
I'm surprised how fast the contagion of my comic newbieness has spread to other family members, or at least to the ones I have any influence over ie. my sisters. It took a while for my pony habit to filter down to my sisters. Sharon's still neutral about it and likes to set herself up as the "sensible" one, but she's fallen hook, line and sinker into my new comic habit. She was squeeing at the weekend over a Battle Royale manga some guy had brought into school: "The art is so pretty! Even when you're watching someone's brains getting blown to bits, it's so pretty!" *starry eyes*
I went swimming yesterday and my shampoo spilt all over my bag and my quilt, so I had to wash everything. Not amused was I. I'm not sure if I'll go swimming today. I had a bad cramp in my leg this morning and I wouldn't want to upset it. Fitting the swimming into my schedule is more difficult now the light summer evenings are gone. If I stuck to my old times - aiming to be in the pool at half-5 - I'd be walking there and back in the dark, which I'm not comfortable with. Plus I destroyed my swimsuit by not rinsing it thoroughly enough, so I've had to borrow my mum's, which doesn't fit me all that well.
I'm also very sleepy. I went with Sveta to see Elizabethtown last night; it was the very last showing and we weren't home till near midnight, and of course I dicked about until about 1 in the morning. I need to go to bed at a decent hour tonight. I'll maybe ask Sharon to record Lost for me, and go to bed about half-10. I am not, however, missing Rome.

Nov. 10th, 2005 11:49 am*yawn* Today is going to be a weird day. I dreamt about marking essays and one of my flatmates telling me off for keeping my bread frozen. I'm tired and icky-feeling. I couldn't shower this morning because the sockets in my room stopped working last night so I had no hairdryer. I've got a little bit of a tummy ache. I haven't got anything done on my chapter revision like I was hoping. And of course, the day I go down early to Forbidden Planet is the day that they're shipping this week's new comics late >.< *yawn*
Not so much sex in Rome last night, just lots and lots of folk getting killed, yay!

Nov. 3rd, 2005 11:48 amFrom my Forgotten English calender - a quotation from H. L. Mencken's The American Language (1919)
"In 1915, the National Council of Teachers of English - following that hopeful American custom which gave the nation Mother's Day and Safety-First and Eat More Cheese Weeks - proposed to make the first seven days of November Better-Speech Week."
...There's an Eat More Cheese Week?!? Roflmao!
I watched the first episode of Rome last night (cos, you know, ex-Latin student and general interest in that period). After about the third sex scene, I wanted to tell the makers, "Yes, we get it, the Romans liked to shag. A lot! A hell of a lot! Can we get on with the political plotting now, please?!" *rolls eyes*
*groan* Teaching today. I really can't be bothered, even though it's dead easy this week and requires no effort from me.
