So, my opinion of My Little Pony The Movie? It's... alright. The plot is on the picaresque side and feels rushed. Elements like the city where everything is for sale, the airship pirates, the sea ponies, are skimmed through rather than solidly established. Similarly, the chief villain is a non-entity; he gets talked about a lot but doesn't actually do anything until the final act. Yes, I know the real focus is on Tempest, the redeemable second-string villain, but in order for that redemption to have impact, you need a sense of how powerful the evil entangling them is.

Cut for spoiler )

So it's a bit rambling, shallow and scattershot. But then, I'm looking at it with an adult's eye; ankle biters may be more forgiving.

Watching Toddlers and Tiaras (not my choice of viewing, I hasten to add). There is a child on here called "Rainbow Dash".

Yes, I know it's not Sunday but I can't wait until the end of the week to share these!

Sketchy Sunday Blast from the Past 2 photo Lipsy_zps350a7943.jpg

My sister Amy found these when she was clearing out the cupboards in her room yesterday. Oh man, 2001, thirteen years ago; these pictures have just hit the awkward teenage years. Ok, Ice Crystal has horribly deformed shoulders and upper arms, and he's, ah, rather snug in the crotch area (o.O'). Lipsy, meanwhile, has impossibly tiny feet with insanely long legs, and her bust is set way too low, it's halfway to her belly button lol. I couldn't draw a horse's head face-on, that's why they're both looking awkwardly to one side - they'd have a terrible crick in their necks if they were real.

...Lipsy's shorts are awesome, though. I'm really pleased with the shorts. ^.^

So, for reasons that I'm not going to go into for the minute, I went searching back through some old notebooks and found my bullet-pointed summary of "Ancient legends + history of Ponyland (Terra Equerum)". Oh boy. This was... pretty ambitious. I mean, I don't know when I thought I was going to get time to write such an epic. o.O' The bullet-point version, with some editing for better clarity, is underneath the cut below.

A confession: while the vast majority of names (bar any characters created by Hasbro) are my own invention, there are five which aren't. Seraph, Shade, Starbirth, Wind Chaser and Brutus were all inspired by fan art posted by "Bouncy" on the old Quacker County message board. 'Starbirth', 'Wind Chaser' and 'Brutus' were the names actually used by Bouncy for the characters she had created; 'Seraph' and 'Shade' were adapted from her original names of 'Seraphim' and 'Shadowglory'.

Very very long - you have been warned )

And if you read all that, go have a lie down; you've earned it lol.

This makes me laugh each time I see it.

Also, we have discovered the location of Care-a-lot. (Well, what else does a rainbow-coloured cloud mean?)

[Edit to add]: Also, in issue 16 of IDW's My Little Pony Friendship is Magic comic, our heros get chased by zombie-ponies... who, upon being returned to normal, are revealed as the original six G1 ponies! I don't know whether that detail was down to the writer, Heather Nuhfer, or the artist, Amy Mebberson, but it made me squee. ^.^

...Don't have anything to post, but I feel that now I've made the effort to come her, I should say something.

How hard can it be to find zip-lock baggies? I want them for packing ponies, figured it would keep them clean and secure. Admittedly, I only looked in two places. But as far as I could see, all baggies were either tie-handles, twisty wire ties or just open-mouthed with no way of closing them provided.

Thinking about it, the twisty wires could work... Never mind.

Back to work after a fortnight off, and I end up staying till half-five. The time always runs away with me in that place. I never realise when it's lunchtime or home-time, and there's always just one more thing to do...

And that's the only interesting things I have to say :/

My word, I haven't done a meme in AGES! Ages and ages and ages.

Ages.

Further to yesterday's posting, some more details:

The "charity lot" (more on the inverted commas below) are a mixture of G1, 2, 3 and a variety of fakies as well, plus as many of their surviving accessories as I can find (and a few Barbie ones thrown in for good measure). There's also a G1 Dream Castle, a G2 Ponyland Palace and Wedding Chapel, and a G3 grocery store and Cotton Candy Cafe. And a Keyper - with its Finder. And two Sky Dancers with launching devices. And an art set, but that's not important right now!

The bait - for custom or restoration, whatever you see fit - are all G1 bar one G3 (an attack of felt tip measles - probably only needs a decent bath and she'd be fine, but I never got into the restoration end of the MLP business) and one fakie (which I suspect was turned out of a Hasbro mold; it looks very similar to the G1 babies).

Photographs can be provided, although I haven't taken any as yet.

Current plan with the "charity lot" is:
1. Match the playsets to their surviving accessories (plus any extras that fit)
2. Match ponies to their surviving accessories (or any accessories that I think suitable - for instance, I've put all the baby ponies with the baby accessories, although the babies are a mix of generations and the accessories are all G1)
3. Match a set of ponies to the playsets. The smallest playset grouping at the moment's three.
4. Divide the rest into sets of two, three or four, depending on numbers.
5. Provide notes on each group for potential new owners. Yes, I know I'm thinking about this too much, shut up :P Names, personalities, relationships, what the stuff is that they come with. Any kids'll probably ignore it but I'll feel like I've given them a primer.
6. Box up in their groupings.
7. Send... somewhere.

There has been debate on point 7. Charity shop? Playgroup? Creche? There are too many tiny parts to entrust them with small children, but I'd like to know that they're going to be played with and enjoyed.

There has also been debate about them going to charity at all. I have zero experience in selling online. This is due to (a) laziness, (b) being out of touch with the MLP community large and (c) lack of PayPal - the latter due to being scared off by horror stories about payments lost or taken out by mistake etc. In the past I've done on-line business mostly by trading A for B, but since I don't want any Bs right now... *shrugs*

(And yes, yes, I know I'm making pathetic, whiny excuses :P I'm like electricity - path of least resistance.)

Besides, I'm not interested in making a profit. The ones I've picked out as potential bait are just shaved/marked in such a way that I'd feel guilty about dumping them on charity.

Due to space constraints and a general urge in the house to clear out, I'm getting rid of most of my pony collection. I'm giving the ones in decent condition to charity, but there are about 10 or so which would be better as custom bait. I don't know if anyone on my friends list still does customs, but if you want 'em or know of anyone who'd want 'em, let me know here. Only money I'd be looking is the cost of postage.

NaNo Day 8

I skipped day 7 and watched My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on YouTube instead. Sleep-deprived Applejack is hilarious!

Day 8:

10791 / 50000 words. 22% done!

Yeah, I'm behind. Oh well, I've been behind every other day too (bar one). I've decided to stick for now with the word count on the Macbook; it's more comforting than the others :)

Just watched MLP "Friendship is Magic Part 2" (thank you, pensivepine and YouTube).

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Favourite part? Pinkie Pie's song. "Tell me she isn't!" "She is!"

Second favourite part? Princess Luna being incredibly cute and tiny and conflicted and cute :DDDDDD

D'awww.

Joanne, the ponies arrived in excellent condition! Thank you very, very much ^.^ Amy was particularly pleased to finally get her hands on a Wysteria.

Graham Storey is dead. I know the name means nothing to any of you, and the only reason he means anything to me is cos he was a Dickens scholar and co-edited the Pilgrim edition of Dickens's letters. It's strange to hear about people dying in your field of research, whose stuff you've read. It's strange to meet them too; I ran into several scholars at the last Dickens conference I was at, whom I'd read.

Which reminds me, the Dickens Symposium is in Belfast this upcoming summer. I reckon Leon will want me to give a paper at it :/

---

I had some mooncake (moon cake? moon-cake?) just a few minutes ago. The green bean bit of it reminded me of fudge, and I was surprised that the salted duck egg actually went ok with it. I wouldn't want more than one bit at a time though.

Sooooooo much work, so little time! Mark took over his old laptop at the weekend to play "Red Alert" so I had to use the old computer upstairs. Which was ok, but I would have preferred to have been working downstairs, with more direct internet access instead of having to untangle the extension lead to Mum and Dad's bedroom.

So, I was all depressed from my Monday class - they're the ones that won't talk to me and I have to carry an hour-long tutorial on my own *headdesk* - but then I learn that Joanne's package has arrived at home and I'm all happy!!! Thank you, Joanne!!!

Except now I wish I could go home and see them, and have my tea cooked for me, and play with new ponies. );

It's alright, people! I finally got in touch with my supervisor last night (damn man's so hard to get a hold of) and he explained that the letter I was sent was a form letter, constructed for people at an earlier stage in their PhD, and nothing in it applied to me - well, apart from the date and time. So no 3000-word application for me!!! *Sighs of relief all round*

But dagnamit, they shouldn't SCARE me like that! *Beats Brian Caraher around the head with a big stick*

And now for something completely different )

OHHHHH SHELLEYYYYYY!!!

*Headbutts her*

Go check your e-mails.

It snowed overnight, and this time, it did lie. I went out this morning and built a miniature snowman. He's so cute! He's still surviving (minus one eye, which fell out), but only because I was able to move him about and get him out of the sun. It is supposed to snow more tonight, so maybe that'll save him for another day.

This week has been... bad. Not "bad" as in "I've had a terrible time," but "bad" as in "I didn't do things the way I was supposed to." Namely, I have slept in every day this week, stayed away from the university library, started work late, gave it up early, and tended to want to avoid company and get pissed off when people interrupted my stuff. (I wish someone would invent remote headphone for the tv. Then you could just put the headphones on and listen to your programme in peace, while everyone around you jabbers on.) I mean, even right now? I should probably be doing work, writing more of my PhD piece, I mean Leon wants over 25 pages for the middle of March; but here I am, on LJ again, cos I'm not gonna go out to the university in the snow and cold, and it's too late to go now anyway, and the disc I have my work on won't run on James' computer here at home, and I've got bored with the work which I was doing.

On an up side, however: ponies have FINALLY landed locally. When I say "ponies," I mean the 03 Rainbow ponies and season ponies, as well as some of the new 04 ponies (up till now, the only 03 ponies I could find were the Glitter sets and the castle/salon/shop playsets), and when I say "locally," I mean at the toyshop which is closest to my home-home, that toyshop being Walkers in Ballymoney. And on an upper side: Philip has a dentist's appointment in Ballymoney tomorrow, so I'll be taking the train to Ballymoney rather than Ballymena, and might just get the chance to go see what I want :DDDDDD

James had his visa interview on Tuesday. He says it was the shortest interview he has ever had. They asked two questions:

1. Do you intend to come home again?
2. Do you plan to deal in drugs while in America?

...They expect people to ever answer, "yes," to that last question?

But he's got his visa, so soon he shall be departing, and we shall be joined by Dee, which means we shall probably have Clive round here a lot. Now, I like Clive. He is a great guy; he knows a lot on some very esoteric subjects and he can be interesting. He just doesn't know when a topic is dead and done with. And he doesn't know when it's a good time to leave. And, to make it worse, Joanna and Pamela then have to moan about it. *rolls eyes*

[Edit: Hmm, SO not seeing how this icon means "apathetic." "Apathetic" does not conjure up images of palm beaches for me. It conjures up images of shoe-scuffing and shoulder-shrugging.]

[Edit 2: And the "bored" one is worse! People don't cry when they are bored; they're too bored to cry.]

[Edit 3: *Throws hands up at "listless"* I give up!]
