So, my opinion of My Little Pony The Movie? It's... alright. The plot is on the picaresque side and feels rushed. Elements like the city where everything is for sale, the airship pirates, the sea ponies, are skimmed through rather than solidly established. Similarly, the chief villain is a non-entity; he gets talked about a lot but doesn't actually do anything until the final act. Yes, I know the real focus is on Tempest, the redeemable second-string villain, but in order for that redemption to have impact, you need a sense of how powerful the evil entangling them is.

There was one thing, however, which pleased me a lot: Tempest's broken horn remains "unfixed" at the end. With her fine control of magic damaged, Tempest is the equivalent of an amputee or someone with limited mobility, and I'm sure most of the audience would expect that having turned to the good, she would be magically made "whole" again. The writers, thankfully, don't fall for that trap. Instead, Tempest continues to live with her injury, with no one suggesting that she needs to be "fixed" or apologising that this hasn't happened yet. In fact, her contribution to the closing party would perhaps have been impossible without her broken horn.

So it's a bit rambling, shallow and scattershot. But then, I'm looking at it with an adult's eye; ankle biters may be more forgiving.
