So. Trying to be more sociable and (re)connect with folk, be more proactive about my life...

I’m terrified.

I am not the most socially savvy of people. I am the one who will sit silently in between two different conversations and be part of neither. I compartmentalise my life e.g. the people from work don’t appear in my life outside of work and if I do meet them outside of work, I find it awkward and embarrassing and I can’t get away fast enough, particularly if they meet me alongside people I know from a different compartment of my life. I don’t know what I’m doing.

The above has been inspired by my discovery of “the island game” in a book. I don’t know if anyone has ever heard about this before or played it; it sounds like the kind of thing people would do at sleepovers. Anyway, not gonna describe the game itself here but let’s just say my answers were depressingly on-the-nose... And it just got me thinking

...Ok, LJ, what's the craic with loading up, only to vanish? I can see the content while the page is loading but the minute that bar hits 100%: poof! White screen. It seems the only way to stop it is to stab at a command as quickly as possible, such as "Post new entry". But when I try to read my friends list, I'm not pressing any commands, just scrolling through, so it vanishes >:(. If this is how the Russians are going to play it, I'm gonna get pissed...

No more Discworld. No more wise, crazy, laugh-out-loud antics from Vimes, Granny, Moist, Death or Lord Vetinari. It's over. He's over.

Plenty of people will be more articulate on this person than me: people who knew him, friends, families, colleagues, people who were a part of his life and he was a part of theirs, in person. I didn't know him, never met him. But I know the stories. And the thought of there being no new ones... I mourn for all the parts of the Disc which we will never see now.

(It sounds selfish to mourn a man's death by saying, "What am I supposed to read now? ;_;" But that is the first thing I thought about - there will be no more Discworld - and I'll bet I'm not the only one. And there's The Long Earth series as well, though Stephen Baxter may continue that on his own.)
