Lifted from Foof:
1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?
I got an LJ! I also actually achieved something in my PhD.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never make New Year's resolutions. It's just not a tradition with our family.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
In real life, no. On LJ, Sunny and
coffeechica had sprogs.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
One of our neighbours died, I remember that. And just last week, an old woman that my brother knows got run over by a bus.
5. What countries did you visit?
Scotland.
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
A complete thesis.
7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
June 24. Differentiation. Bad, bad day.
8. What was your greates achievement for the year?
Achieving something in my PhD.
9. What was your biggest failure?
The differentiation interview.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I sprained my ankle really badly in February. Other than that, just the usual round of colds and stuffy noses. And I was mysteriously sick one night, but I threw everything up in one go and was fine afterwards, so I don't think that counts as illness.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Can I count the Christmas presents I've got for people? *hugs self* I can't wait to see their faces when they see what I got for them!
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Leon, for finally getting the stick out of his ass and helping me with this damn PhD.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Leon when he still had the stick up his ass.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Into the pockets of cafe-owners along Botanic Avenue. Also into the pockets of book publishers.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
My parents winning the trip to Gran Canaria!!!!
16. What song will always remind you of 2004?
Hmm, I'm not sure. Possibly "Tangled" by Maroon 5?
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
I. happier or sadder? Happier, because I actually have something done and finished!
II. thinner or fatter? I think I'm about the same.
III. richer or poorer? Just about the same.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Being with my friends. I miss hanging out with them so much.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Probably being lazy with my PhD work. I have so much to do, it's not funny, and for a large part I only have myself to blame.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
At home, with my family, having a big meal and just relaxing.
21. [like last year, there is no question 21]
22. Did you fall in love in 2004?
No, but I did recover from a crush, and acquired several new obsessions.
23. How many one-night stands?
*sigh* If only... (Joking!)
24. What was your favourite TV program?
"Law and Order: Criminal Intent", "Without a Trace", "Jake 2.0", "University Challenge", "Top Gear", and "Law and Order" and "La Femme Nikita" repeats
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Hayden White and Michel Foucault.
26. What was the best book you read?
"Stolen" by Kelley Armstrong, although "Dime Store Magic" comes a very close second, and "A Tale of Two Cities" (Charles Dickens) and "The Runes of the Earth" (Stephen Donaldson) are also up there.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The greatest surprise was Britney Spears's album "In The Zone"; I actually liked the vast majority of it. The second greatest surprise was the fact that my mum likes Abba!
28. What did you want and get?
Video copy of X-Men 2; Periwinkle, Wondermint and various other ponies (cheers, Shelley!); lots and lots of books!
29. [apparently, there's no question 29 this year either...boy they suck...get on the ball, Survey God!]
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Starsky and Hutch and Dodgeball are the two top dogs at the minute, but I still haven't seen The Incredibles or Blade Trinity, so don't be sure about that yet.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 24, and I can't remember what I did! Probably nothing. I like my birthdays quiet and casual.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I can't decide between spending much more time hanging out with my friends or getting through the differentiation better than I did.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?
Zip-up fleece jackets are IN, dude! But ponchoes are sooo OUT!!!
34. What kept you sane?
My family, TV, LJ and my imagination (although I sometimes wonder about the latter).
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Eh. I haven't fancied anyone this year much. Anyone that I did fancy, I still fancy, but in a background "yeah he's cute" way, rather than a full-blown Minty-esque "OMGsqueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!11oneone!" way. Owen Wilson in Starsky and Hutch and Vince Vaughn in Dodgeball come closest. I did develop an (on-going) obsession with the character Bobby Goren, from "Law and Order: Criminal Intent", but that's not the same as fancying him.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The student protest against the "Spotlight" programme about rowdy students in the Holy Lands area of Belfast. That majorly pissed me off. Hey, how can we best counteract this stereotyping of students as drunken, anti-social vandels trying to intimidate local residents out of their homes? I know, let's hold a huge drunken rally, at night, right in the middle of the area where the trouble is, keep everybody awake, and get the local MP to climb up on top of a car and tell us to shut up! Yeah, great way to counteract the "stereotyping".[/end sarcasm]
37. Who did you miss?
Lesley :(
38. Who was the best new person that you met?
Hm, I don't know. The jury's still out on my kitchen-mates in Mount Charles.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004:
Put more thought into your future.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Reach down your hand in your pocket
Pull out some hope for me
It's been a long day
Always
