Hmm, having read an interview with the author recently, I feel I ought to warn you: the hero does something pretty despicable in the very first book. (Apparently, people have felt compelled to go up to the author and tell him they threw his book across the room at that point.) I originally read the books out of order, so I knew about it before I read it, and I got to see the consequences and how Covenant takes responsibility for what he did. I can't tell you what exactly he does, cos it spoils a major plot point, but just to let you know.
